Germany Moves to Revive Fighter Jet Plans After FCAS Project Collapse

(MENAFN) Germany is in discussions with several international partners over the development of a next-generation fighter jet following the breakdown of the long-delayed Franco-German Future Combat Air System (FCAS) programme, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday, according to reports.

Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Pistorius said the collapse of FCAS was not unexpected, noting that warning signs had emerged over time due to persistent disagreements between industry players involved in the project.

“The fact that FCAS has now been shut down came as no surprise. Signs had been pointing in that direction for quite some time,” he said, adding that disputes between defence companies Dassault and Airbus were a major factor behind the failure.

He stressed that Germany is now examining alternative paths forward but declined to specify potential partners or leadership arrangements, saying discussions have been ongoing for months.

“As for the new jet, we shall see which path we take. We have been in discussions with various stakeholders about this for months—as you can well imagine. However, I am not going to speculate publicly here about which project it might turn out to be or who would lead it,” he said.

The FCAS programme, estimated to be worth around €100 billion ($116 billion), was originally designed to develop a sixth-generation combat aircraft to replace France’s Rafale and Germany’s Eurofighter jets.

However, the project was repeatedly stalled by disagreements over leadership structure, industrial workload distribution, technology sharing, and intellectual property rights, ultimately preventing it from advancing to the next stage.
