German Opposition Figure Condemns EU Sanctions on Journalist as “Totalitarian Overreach”

(MENAFN) A senior German opposition politician has criticized the enforcement of European Union sanctions against a pro-Palestinian journalist, describing the measures as an excessive and authoritarian misuse of political power.

Sahra Wagenknecht argued that the sanctions regime applied to journalist Huseyin Dogru and related financial restrictions affecting his family amount to what she called “totalitarian madness.”

According to reports, bank accounts linked to Dogru and his relatives were frozen or placed under scrutiny, with financial institutions citing concerns over indirect control of funds. His mother’s account was reportedly frozen, while additional accounts belonging to close family members have also faced restrictions or investigation.

Wagenknecht condemned the measures in strong terms, stating: “This is how dictatorships treat opposition figures.” She further argued that the EU’s approach and national enforcement actions represent what she described as unlawful collective punishment, urging authorities to reverse the restrictions.

The journalist in question, Huseyin Dogru, has previously worked with media organizations that have drawn scrutiny from Western governments over alleged links to Russian state media structures. EU authorities imposed personal sanctions on him in 2025, accusing him of disseminating false or misleading content on politically sensitive issues and alleging that his work contributed to social and political tensions in Germany.

Officials supporting the sanctions framework argue that the measures are part of broader efforts to counter foreign information influence and disinformation campaigns, particularly in the context of heightened geopolitical tensions.

The case has become part of a wider debate in Germany and the EU over the boundaries between national security, freedom of expression, and the application of sanctions against individuals accused of information-related offenses.
